Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTOP): Supportive, Safe, and Personalised Care
At our clinic, we understand that deciding to end a pregnancy is a deeply personal and sometimes difficult choice. If you’re considering a medical termination of pregnancy (MTOP), know that you’re not alone — we’re here to support you with care, respect, and clear guidance every step of the way.
MTOP is a non-surgical method available up to 9 weeks (63 days) of gestation. It involves using safe, effective medication to end a pregnancy in a private, familiar environment at your own home.
Understanding the Two-Step Process
Medical abortion takes place in two stages:
The first medication blocks the hormone needed to sustain the pregnancy.
After 36–48 hours, a second medication is taken to help the uterus pass the pregnancy tissue.
This method is up to 98% effective and is considered a low-risk option when performed under medical guidance.
Your Care Journey
First Consultation: Getting to Know You and Your Options
During your initial visit, your doctor will talk through your general health, answer any questions you may have, and gently explore all your options. This consultation is designed to ensure you feel confident, well-informed, and supported.
You’ll also be given referrals for:
Routine blood tests (including blood group and antibody screening)
A urine test to check for any sexually transmitted infections
An ultrasound to confirm the pregnancy’s location and gestational age
Second Consultation: Preparing for the Process
Once your results are available, we’ll meet again to revisit your options and discuss the medical process in more detail. If you feel ready to go ahead with MTOP, the doctor will prescribe MS 2-Step — the medication used in this process. We’ll also provide medications to help manage any discomfort such as pain or nausea.
Third Consultation: Follow-Up and Ongoing Care
Your health and peace of mind remain our priority. At your follow-up appointment, we’ll confirm the outcome of the MTOP, review your recovery, and offer support around contraception and any future family planning.

Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTOP)
Medical abortion is a safe and effective method of terminating a pregnancy up to 9 weeks (63 days) gestation using medication rather than surgery.
Medical abortion is a two-stage process. The first stage involves taking a tablet which blocks the hormone necessary for the pregnancy to continue. This is followed 24-48 hours later by a second medication which causes the contents of the uterus to be expelled.
Overall, medical abortion is a low-risk non-surgical option for early termination with a high success rate, up to 98%.
Initial Consultation
During the first consultation, the doctor will overview your general health and discuss potential alternative options to termination/abortion in order to provide informed consent.
You will be provided with a pathology referral for routine blood tests to assess her general health, blood group and antibody; urine test for detecting sexually transmitted diseases; and a referral to have a dating ultrasound – which determines if the pregnancy is in uterus and the age of the pregnancy in day.
Second Consultation
The second consultation will be scheduled for a few days following the above-mentioned tests, it is during this consultation that we will again talk about potential side effects of medications and surgical abortion as an alternative.
Providing you are comfortable with proceeding with the medical termination – the doctor will prescribe MS 2-Step and provide guidance on how to take the medication. The doctor will also prescribe medications for pain and nausea.
Third Consultation
During the third consultation we confirm the success of the procedure by reviewing blood test results, assessing general health and counsel on future pregnancies and contraception.
