What Are Mirena & Kyleena IUDs?

Mirena and Kyleena are long-acting, reversible hormonal intrauterine devices (IUDs) used for contraception. These small, T-shaped devices are placed inside the uterus, where they release a low dose of the hormone levonorgestrel, providing effective birth control.

At High Street Medical Clinic (HSMC), medical practitioners, Dr. Spottiswood and Dr. Ting are accredited to offer patients Mirena & Kyleena insertion and removal services in accordance with Australian clinical guidelines. If you are interested in learning more about hormonal IUDs, a consultation with Dr. Spottiswood or Dr. Ting can provide information on whether Mirena or Kyleena is a suitable option for you.

How Do Mirena & Kyleena Work?

Both IUDs work by releasing a small, continuous dose of progestin (levonorgestrel), which:

  • Thickens cervical mucus, making it harder for sperm to reach an egg
  • Thins the uterine lining, reducing the chance of implantation
  • May reduce menstrual bleeding over time (particularly with Mirena)
  • Suppresses ovulation in some individuals, especially Mirena

Unlike the copper IUD, Mirena and Kyleena do not contain oestrogen, making them an option for individuals who cannot use oestrogen-based contraception.

Mirena vs. Kyleena: Understanding the Differences

Important Information about Mirena’s Duration of Use

  • Mirena is approved for up to 8 years when used for contraception.
  • If Mirena is used to manage heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia) or as endometrial protection during hormone therapy, it is only approved for 5 years.
  • Your doctor will provide guidance on whether to continue using Mirena beyond 5 years, depending on your medical condition and contraceptive needs

Benefits & Risks of Mirena & Kyleena

Potential Benefits:

  • Highly effective – Studies indicate 99.8% effectiveness for Mirena and 99.7% for Kyleena
  • Long-lasting contraception – Up to 8 years for Mirena and 5 years for Kyleena
  • May reduce period pain and heavy bleeding – Mirena is approved for menorrhagia treatment
  • Low maintenance – No daily pill required
  • Reversible – Fertility typically returns after removal

Considerations & Possible Risks:

  • Changes in menstrual bleeding – Irregular spotting or changes in period flow may occur, especially in the first few months

  • Hormonal side effects – Some individuals experience headaches, mood changes, acne, or breast tenderness

  • Increased risk of ovarian cysts – Mirena users may experience a higher incidence of ovarian cysts compared to Kyleena users

  • Perforation or Expulsion Risk – Rare but possible; occurs in less than 1% of insertions

A doctor can help assess whether a hormonal IUD is suitable for you based on your medical history.

For more information about possible side effects, precautions, and medical warnings, please refer to the official Consumer Medicine Information (CMI) for Mirena and Consumer Medicine Information (CMI) for Kyleena.

Mirena & Kyleena Insertion & Removal

Insertion Procedure:

  • Consultation – Discuss your contraception options and medical history.
  • Insertion – The IUD is placed inside the uterus by a doctor using a sterile applicator. The procedure typically takes 5–10 minutes.
  • Post-insertion care – Some mild cramping and spotting may occur initially.
  • Follow-up check – A review appointment may be recommended 4–6 weeks after insertion.

Does the Procedure Hurt?

Discomfort levels vary. Some individuals experience mild cramping, while others may feel stronger discomfort. Pain relief options can be discussed before the procedure.

Removal Process

  • The doctor gently removes the IUD by pulling the retrieval strings.
  • Fertility typically returns quickly after removal.
  • Some mild cramping may occur during the process.

A doctor can discuss alternative contraception options if you plan to remove your IUD.

FAQs

Mirena has been TGA-approved for up to 8 years when used for contraception. However, if it is used for heavy menstrual bleeding or endometrial protection, it is only approved for up to 5 years. Your doctor will advise on the best replacement schedule based on your needs.

Using an IUD beyond the approved duration may result in reduced effectiveness and an increased risk of complications. If your Mirena or Kyleena has reached its expiry period, you should consult your doctor about removal or replacement.

Fertility typically returns quickly after IUD removal. However, individual experiences may vary, and it may take a few months for regular menstrual cycles to return.

Whilst Mirena and Kyleena are highly effective, no contraceptive method is 100% effective. If you experience pregnancy symptoms, consult your doctor immediately.
