Every Spot Checked, Every Concern Addressed

Patients back exposed, ready for moles and freckles to be checked for skin cancer.

A full-body skin cancer check is a thorough and vital procedure for detecting early signs of skin cancer. The experienced doctors at High Street Medical Clinic, use the latest techniques to check your skin from head to toe, ensuring nothing goes unnoticed. This examination is especially crucial for individuals with a high number of moles, a history of sunburns, or a family history of skin cancer.

Is this the right service for you?

It is important to remember that you will always benefit from a skin check, no matter what skin type you have or what background you come from. If you answer YES to any of the below questions, we recommend a full body skin check or mole mapping to help you have peace of mind about your skin:

  • previous history of skin cancer?
  • family history of melanoma or other skin cancers?
  • moles or spots that I am concerned or not sure about?
  • over 100 moles?
  • used a solarium in the past?
  • multiple sunburns growing up?
  • fair skin, and skin that burns easily?
  • I am over the age of 40?

If you answer yes to more than one of the questions, you may be at higher risk of skin cancer, and may want to consider having total body mole mapping photographs. We have a full body skin check with mole mapping service.

FAQs

A full-body skin cancer check is a comprehensive examination of your skin from head to toe, conducted by a qualified GP or dermatologist. It aims to identify any suspicious spots or lesions that might need further examination or treatment.

A typical full-body check for skin cancer takes about 15–20 minutes, depending on your skin type, the number of moles, and whether any areas require closer examination. As it does vary, your appointment length at HSMC will be 30 minutes, providing ample time for a thorough skin exam.

It’s best to come with clean skin, free of makeup or heavy lotions. Also, removing nail polish from your fingernails and toenails can help the doctor inspect these areas more thoroughly.

The exam is non-invasive and not painful. You may feel slight discomfort if a lesion is touched or if a biopsy is needed, but the doctor will discuss these steps with you during the exam.

Yes, you will be asked to undress to your underwear. This allows the doctor to thoroughly check your skin, including areas that are not regularly exposed to the sun.

If any suspicious spots or moles are found, the doctor may take a closer look with a dermatoscope, discuss the findings with you, and recommend the next steps, which may include a biopsy, treatments, or referral to a specialist.

It’s recommended to have a full-body skin check annually, but your doctor may suggest a different frequency based on your skin type, history of sun exposure, and family history of skin cancer.

Whilst a full-body skin cancer check does include some mole mapping and macrophotography, it is not as extensive as the ‘mole mapping’ service. When undertaking a full-body skin cancer check, body mapping photography is limited to 1–2 regions, and macrophotography is limited to 3–5 lesions, whereas the ‘mole mapping’ service includes the total body.
