Did You Know? Lung cancer isn’t just a concern for smokers. In fact, anyone can develop lung cancer, including people who have never smoked.
It’s a disease that can affect anyone with lungs, which means all of us.
At High Street Medical Clinic, our independent doctors see firsthand how lifestyle, environment, and awareness can make a real difference.
Here’s what’s worth knowing, and a few smart ways to look after your lungs for life.
1. You Don’t Need to Smoke to Be at Risk
While smoking is still the biggest cause, it’s far from the only one. Many Australians are exposed to everyday risk factors without realising it, such as:
- Living near heavy traffic or construction zones
- Using a woodfire heater at home
- Workplace dust or chemical exposure
- Passive smoke from others
- Family history or previous lung infections
For instance, a recent ABC report showed that wood heater pollution contributes to hundreds of preventable deaths across Australia every year.
Small choices like improving ventilation, wearing a mask, or swapping a smoky heater for a cleaner option can help reduce long-term risk.

2. Symptoms Often Start Subtly
Lung cancer can be sneaky. Early signs are often dismissed as “just a cough”.
See your GP if you notice:
- A cough that lasts more than three weeks
- Coughing up blood or unusual phlegm
- Chest pain or tightness
- Shortness of breath
- Unexplained fatigue or weight loss
- You’re puffed out too often, especially for simple activities like walking up short stairs
Even if you’ve never smoked, these are worth checking. Early detection leads to better outcomes.
3. Vaping Isn’t a Safe Shortcut
Vaping is often marketed as “healthier” but it’s not harmless. The fine particles and flavouring chemicals can inflame lung tissue and affect long-term breathing.
In fact, as Lung Foundation Australia found when testing more than 50 flavoured vape liquids, over 60% had chemicals that could be toxic if you vaped them a lot.
Take a look at this News.com.au article that reveals shocking truths about popcorn lung and vaping.
Choose vaping over smoking and you’re still coating your lungs in chemicals.
4. Know How Lungs Actually Work
Did you know? Your lungs aren’t two bags of air, they’re millions of tiny sacs, like a complicated sponge.
Each tiny sac transfers oxygen into your blood and clears carbon dioxide, every few seconds.
Here’s the catch: Once those sacs are damaged, they don’t grow back. They lose their stretch, meaning less oxygen for your body permanently.
The upside? Remove irritants like smoke or long-term pollution, and the healthy sacs work better. Lungs can recover some strength, but they can’t replace what’s lost.
5. Your GP Is Your Best Starting Point
You don’t have to wait for symptoms. Your GP can:
- Discuss your personal risk factors
- Arrange imaging or lung function tests
- Help you manage or quit smoking/vaping
- Refer you to respiratory specialists when needed
If something feels off, even just being puffed out more than usual, get it checked and stay on top of it.

FYI: Australia has some pretty good air, so make the most of it.
In terms of annual average PM2.5 concentration, we rank 128 / 138 countries, meaning only 10 countries have a lower PM2.5 concentration than us.
There’s more to it than PM2.5. Global Relocate’s Countries with the Cleanest Air ranking puts Australia at having the third cleanest air of 125 countries surveyed.
Make the most of it.
6. Know the Dos and Don’ts (Beyond the Obvious)
We’re not going to say “don’t smoke”, everyone already knows that.
Here are a few less obvious dos and don’ts for healthier lungs:
Do:
- Laugh often: it helps expand your lungs and boost oxygen flow.
- Open your windows daily: fresh air dilutes indoor pollutants.
- Keep your home plants healthy (or get some if you don’t have any): they can help clean indoor air naturally.
Don’t:
- Sit still too long: deep breathing comes from movement, not the couch. Or an office chair, if you’re sitting for long periods at work, move around every 45-50 minutes.
- Ignore your posture: slumping compresses lung capacity and reduces oxygen intake.
- Assume you’re “too young”: lung damage can start quietly in your 20s or 30s.
Your lungs are low-maintenance, they just need regular simple care.
Extra: Think of Lung Health as Part of Whole-Body Health
Lung health doesn’t exist in isolation. In fact, keeping your lungs strong often helps protect your heart, immune system, and energy levels too.
As an added bonus, healthier choices you make in favour of your lungs can help lower your risk of bowel cancer, and other illnesses too. Two, or more, birds.
A simple check-up or lifestyle tweak can support multiple parts of your wellbeing.
